SELECTED PROJECTS
|
REETHAUS | Performance space | Spatial Scent | 2024
AOIRO was requested for a scent installlation in the Reethaus, a space for radical presence. With its hand-thatched reed roof, monastic cement interiors, in-built 360-degree spatial sound system and an opening in the ceiling that connects the space to the sky, the space was designed for profound encounters—with arts, with ideas and with each other.
Designed by Austrian architect Monika Gogl in homage to ancient temples, caves and other natural voids, the structure brings visitors into a singular aesthetic environment characterized by haptic contrast and deep calm.
VITRAHAUS | Flagship Museum | Spatial Signature Scent | 2021
The Natural Ambient Scent of Vitrahaus was born on a mutual vision to explore the encounter that fills you with a soothing sense of home. The scent was created as a signature scent of Vitrahaus to first welcome guests at the entrance of the newly renovated Vitrahaus building, a harbour of the uniquely multi-floored house created by Herzog de Meuron, where a journey of curious discovery begins.
Imagining the comfort of the house is surrounded by mild breathes of nature. Constructed with no wall that divides the space, the visitors slowly let their impressions merge with its surrounding air. The air that is transient and echoes the gentle colors.
The olfactory concept of "Soothing sense of home” is interpreted and composed by 100% natural botanical essences. The leaves of Bitter orange and Peppermint, with the twigs & needles of Cypress and Pine, within the trees of Siamwood, Hiba, Hinoki, and Copaiba.

STILL ROOM | Scent Ritual | 2020
This minimalist sanctuary in Antwerp—designed as an "architecture of silence"—uses olfactory layers to ground and inspire its visitors.
In a space of STILL ROOM, where the mind of STUDIO CORKHINO takes shapes, the scent of Hakudo Rain generates a daily ritual, a simple and pure experience to reconnect with the value of time once again and to create awareness of how scent drives us into the body of our memory. As a result, one ‘listens’ to the scent, letting it flow within our entire being to enter the now-here dimension.
This project merged raw tactile architecture, environmental sustainability, and deep olfactory mindfulness to construct a "sanctuary of silence".
AOIRO was brought in to offer a non-visual sensory layer that would define this contemplative void.
CMO PARIS & ÉLITIS | Interior | Spatial Signature Scent | 2018
In 2018, AOIRO created a bespoke Spatial Signature Scent tailored for the high-end interior brands CMO Paris and ÉLITIS. This unique airdesign project translated the raw, tactile world of handcrafted luxury wallcoverings and exotic natural textiles into a cohesive sensory atmosphere.
CMO Paris offers exceptional handcrafted materials in their purest state and pay tribute to the gestures of craftsmen in their simplest, most radical and most essential splendour.
Wild and natural fibres like vetiver, abaca, hemp, raffia, palm leaf, water hyacinth. They grow where they are traditionally woven, in the Philippines, Indonesia and other faraway regions unspoiled by the hub of our cities.

CHINESE FALL | Interior Exhibition | Spatial Signature Scent | 2012
"Chinese Fall" was a spatial air design installation that captured the distinct, atmospheric aromas of Beijing. It translated urban identity, culture, and memory into an olfactory experience.
When trying to simulate the urban atmosphere of a metropolis, one quickly notices that here the olfactory perception and the smell architecture of that city is an indispensable component. After all, this consists of the synaesthetic perceptions of such places and also of the direct experiences with the olfactory spaces that they generate themselves.
Because the atmosphere of a city is far more complex than the audio-visual of our "primary senses", on which we always orient ourselves in metaphysical tradition – the "experience" of a city is instead composed of mood values, sensual experience and interpretation components.
In particular, aesthetic experiences in urban space always arise through sensitive perceptions and the reaction to those direct sensory impressions. The atmosphere (from Greek ατμός, atmós = air, pressure, steam) of a city is not generated by the reflective, rationally comprehensible, but rather by the impulsive with which one is confronted in it – and here it is not least the significant smells of a city that puts you in moods and leaves emotions and memories.
BERLIN FASHION WEEK | Exhibition | Spatial Signature Scent | 2016
In 2016, olfactory design studio AOIRO was commissioned to design a custom Spatial Signature Scentfor a premier exhibition space at Berlin Fashion Week. The exhibition area was curated under the theme of "The Hotel," utilizing a sharp, contemporary minimalist design language.

BRANDERS MITHRIDAT | DINING | Spatial Spatial Signature Scent | 2013
In 2013, the olfactory design studio AOIRO collaborated with the fine dining restaurant Branders Mithridat to engineer a bespoke spatial signature scent. This project focused heavily on integrating historical storytelling with bold interior design choices to shape a guest's transition into the dining environment.
MITHRIDATE is one of the most complex remedy during the Middle Age and Renaissance, with as many as 65 herbal ingredients used as an antidote for poisoning.
Inspired by this history, a forestry and medicinal scent concoction was created to subtly decorate the air of the restaurant entrance. It was used to invite guests to the unique flow of time and to a mystic journey of tastes that they were about to embark.
To match the "antidote" theme and the heavy presence of stag antlers, AOIRO formulated a forestry and medicinal scent concoction

IGNANT SCENT | Signature Scent Airmist | 2023
The limited-edition Ignant Scent translates the visual world of Ignant into a singular olfactory experience. Intended as an atmospheric interpretation of a distinct aesthetic focus,
Two distinct yet complementary references formed the point of departure for AOIRO’s holistic translation of Ignant into a distinctive olfactory experience: the earthy evocations of the forest floor—wood crackling underfoot, soothing pines, and pure resins—and the notion of calm through focus, leading into a contemplative yet fully attuned state of clarity. Explorations of the relationship between balance, disproportion, and harmony inflected the scent’s conceptual development with a positive tension.
AOIRO translated Ignant Founder and Creative Director Clemens Poloczek’s cues into a palette of pure materials. Rather than giving precedence to one particular ingredient, a harmonious imbalance brings each to the fore, eliciting an atmosphere that apports a resonant sensory texture to any space in which it is applied.
FORMA GALLERY | Scent Design | Spatial Scent | 2026
Scent of BIOLUMINESCENCE for the Exhibition Halogen Ornaments at Forma Gallery Berlin.
Unseen spirits radiate in the ebb and flow of the tide. Magnetic and abstract, dwelling in between a dream and the dawn. Rooted in a rhythmic flow, casting silhouette of momentary whole.
Halogen Ornaments transforms the gallery into an immersive realm where light, material, and detail become the language of ornament. In this composition, ornament is not decorative in the classical sense; it emerges as a way of seeing, an invitation to perceive surfaces, forms, textures, and the interplay of light and shadow.
Enhanced by aoiro’s custom scent Bioluminescence and an ambient soundscape by Liliana Bulgac, the exhibition evokes a industrial garden—cool steel surfaces, tactile textures, subtle details shimmering in the light and a layered, sensory atmosphere. Ornament becomes a contemporary dialogue between perception, material presence, and spatial experience.

Bang & Olufsen wanted an invisible sensory element that could amplify the emotional connection to sound. AOIRO translated this by utilizing the Japanese philosophy of Kōdō (the art of "listening" to scent with the entire being).
Rather than distracting from the auditory experience, the scent was tailored to clear mental clutter, slowing the visitor's pace so they could fully focus on the acoustic precision and physical interaction of the speakers.

ODE TO CRAFTMANSHIP | Exhibition | Scent Design | 2023
Aoiro's olfactory design for Donata Wenders’ Ode to Craftsmanship exhibition—originally shown at the Japanisches Palais Dresden—created an immersive sensory layer. Commissioned by the Staatliche Kunstsammlungen Dresden, the scent grounded the visual journey in the rich, tactile traditions of Saxony.
Designed by Aoiro, the scent complemented Donata Wenders' poetic, black-and-white film installations. It was crafted to evoke the raw, earthy atmosphere of traditional workshops and the heritage of skilled handiwork
Commissioned by the Staatliche Kunstsammlungen Dresden, ten installations have been created, focusing on crafts that are characteristic of the region, some of which are at risk of disappearing.

HAGIUS | Holistic Gym | Spatial Signature Scent | 2021
The collaboration between AOIRO and HAGIUS is a premier example of neuro-athletic design, where custom fragrance is used as a functional tool to regulate the human nervous system.
Instead of treating gym scents as a generic mask or a static luxury perk, AOIRO developed a bespoke, circadian-linked olfactory concept. The fragrances shift dynamically throughout the day to mirror the body's natural biological rhythms, stimulating energy during morning workouts and prompting deep neurological recovery in the evening
With Hagius, the two brothers Nicolas and Timothy Hagius set out to create a sports studio in which mind and body are ultimately connected. The 600 m2 space located in a historic post office from 1902, was completely restored by Gonzalez Haase AAS in neutral interiors that mute the noise of modern-day.
To accommodate the holistic concept, in which light, sound and aroma stimulation is varied throughout the day to support the circadian rhythm, a design was implemented to play an active role in targeted prompts and removing external distractors.
The Stillness Ritual: AOIRO also collaborated with Antwerp design practice Studio Corkinho to introduce a physical olfactive ritual inside Hagius’s "Still Rooms". This features a custom-carved burnt cork diffuser cube that naturally absorbs and slowly radiates AOIRO’s raw botanical blends to anchor the athletic environment in meditative silence.
MUTABI | Scent Product Range | 2016
Sleeping brand muun collaborated with Aoiro to create the perfect sensory environment in which to lose oneself to the night.

This collaboration represented a pioneering step in integrating fine olfactory design into the premium electric vehicle (EV) automotive market, specifically tailored for the launch of WM Motor's brand ecosystem.
Weltmeister Automobile, the Chinese electric vehicle brand, believes a brand is more than just a brand and has developed the notion of the ‘brand as platform’ – even though this can at times seem to conflict with brand-building principles.
Offering a multi-sensory experience also aids in building the brand-customer relationship. For Weltmeister, this goes right down to having a signature brand scent that evokes environmentally-friendly vibes.
SAWADE | Chocolatier | Spatial Signature Scent | 2016
AOIRO worked together with Sawade in 2013 to explore how to capture this specific world of their chocolate creation.
The spatial fragrance was commissioned as part of a major brand revitalization led by owners Melanie and Benno Hübel. To honor Sawade's legacy—which began in 1880 on the historic Unter den Linden boulevard—the signature scent was designed to translate the brand's rich confectionery heritage into an atmospheric guest experience.
“Illusional yet authentic, a matured creation that let you walk on air” - it quickly became the concept.
Working with a pure cacao absolute, the scent layed a beautiful base of dark chocolate with aromatic mazipan, It was smoothed by Juniper berry and Gurjum resins, creating a illusion of mouth watering rum raisins and irresistible world of chocolate.
Since 2000 AOIRO`s Scent designer Shizuko Yoshikuni has additionally created signature scents and air design in Japan for the Boutiques of Cartier, Frank Muller and Rolex, the Flagship Stores of Diesel and The North Face, Premium Hotels such as the Mandarin Oriental Tokyo, the Ritz Carlton Tokyo, and also for the Showrooms of Lexus Fairs & Events such as Tokyo Motorshow, 2005 World Expo in Aichi, Designtide Tokyo.
